JEMIMA EIDSON was b. c 1790 in Campbell Co., VA to Henry and Jane Arthur Eidson. She m.
ISAAC THOMAS 22 Oct 1822. In 1827 an indenture was made by the couple about a bond which is significant only in that the security given was the property of his wife's interest in the real and personal estate of Henry Eidson and then held by his wife, Jane.(l) They moved, after 1837 according to the births of their children, with the "family" to Iredell Co., NC. Isaac left a will made 24 Aug 1844 and probated in Aug 1845 in which he named his wife Jemima who was to receive all of his estate, and then to their four children: Mary Ann Eidson, Lucy Jane Thomas, Margaret Susanna Catherine Thomas, and Isaac Henry Thomas. Jemima was executrix and the witnesses were Shadrack Claywell and William Joyner.(2) Jemima is still a widow in the 1860 census. She lived on a 75-a. farm nr Powder Springs. Her 23 yr old son was listed as a farmer, and she had two older daughters to support(3) as well as an infant belonging to Lucy Jane. Her son-in-law, Joseph Eidson, lived next door and she could call on him for heavy work. One suspects she spent much of her time weaving cloth because she reported to the farm census taker that during 1859 she had produced $90 worth of home manufactures, a large amount compared to some of her neighbors. Twenty acres of the farm were improved and used for farming. On that she reported having raised 150 bushels of corn, 20 bu. of wheat and 3 bu. of Irish potatoes. She had also raised $10 worth of orchard products and slaughtered $7 worth of animals. She had one horse, one mule, one milk cow, one head of beef and 10 swine. They all had to be fed, as did her family from the 20 a., although the cattle and hogs likely fed themselves on the 55 unimproved acres. Some of her neighbors had less, but others had more and a few were beginning to become modestly wealthy. Jemima gave her daughters three names each. The four children of Isaac and Jemima were:

9E120 MARY ANN R. THOMAS, b. Sep 1825 in VA, m. JOSEPH ROLDEN EIDSON, her Ist csn., the son of Joseph and Milly Claywell Eidson. See 9E88 for her descendants.

9E122 LUCY JANE F. THOMAS, b. 1 Jan 1827 in VA, m. her Ist csn., as his 2nd wife, CHARLES PATTERSON EIDSON, the son of Barnabus Arthur and Permelia Patterson Eidson. See 9E68 for her family.

9E123 MARGARET SUZANNA CATHERINE THOMAS was b. c 1834 in VA. In 1880 she was 49 and living in Olin Twsp., boarding with her widowed sister, Mary Eidson. She had m. CASH, after 1860, but neither he nor children were enumerated with her.

9E124 ISAAC HENRY THOMAS, b. c 1837 in VA.

LONG ISLAND STARTED WITH MILL CENTURY AGO

photograph, with caption "ABOVE - LONG ISLAND'S PRESENT MILL"

LONG ISLAND - The town of Long Island, on the banks of the Catawba river, had its beginning with the building of a small textile plant about the year 1839 which makes the unincorporated settlement a hundred years old this year.

This little textile building was a wooden structure put up by Messrs. Powell and Shuford. For lights coal oil lamps were used, and instead of steam heat large fireplaces were built in each room.

After some years the mill was sold to James Brown, a native on England, who ran a hosiery mill for several years and then built a brick building which is part of the present plant of the Long Island Cotton mill.

Osborne Brown, son of James, built a store, a frame building which later was brick veneered and which is now occupied by the F. B. Tilley and(?) company.

James Brown, incidentally, was killed one night by a robber whom he encountered in the store.

Long Island takes its name from the Catawba river island of the same name. This island, about a mile in length, begins at what is called the Long Island dam and extends down the river to old Monbo and East Monbo.

Long Island, with a population of around two hundred, has three stores, F. B. Tilley company, S. C. Cresimore store, and Fred H. Lytton company. The Long Island Cotton mill was sold to the Duke Power company several years ago for a half-million dollars.

There are two churches in the community, Olivet Baptist and Concord Methodist, each of which is more than a hundred years old. Fraternal orders at Long Island are the Masonic, Junior O. U. A. M., Daughters of Liberty and the P.(?) O. S. of A. The community is in the Sherrills Ford and Monogram school district.
