Jan LUKENS was born about 1655 in Wickrath, Germany.⁽¹⁾⁽⁶⁾ He died in 1744.⁽¹⁾ In June of 1683, Jan (John) Luken (Lucken) joined 12 other fellow Quaker men, and their families (33 total people), and immigrated to America aboard the ship CONCORD which left from Gravesend, England on 24 July 1683. The immigrants aboard were all from the region called Krefeld that lies in the lower Rhineland Valley about 3 miles from the Rhine River. It is roughly thirty-five miles northwest of Cologne and twelve miles northwest of Dusseldorf. On a modern day map, Krefeld is a city in Germany near the borders of the Netherlands. In the 1600's Krefeld was a part of the Principality of Orange-Nassau and was ruled by William, the III of Orange. The Krefeld region was later annexed to Prussia, a German state in 1703. These families immigrated as a result of the severe persecution they, as Quakers, experienced at the hands of the Dutch Reformed Church and others.

They landed at Phildelphia 6 October 1683 (total travel time of 69 days). This ship was the first ship of Germans to arrive in the New World. The ship included passengers composing 13 familys. The founder of Germantown, PA. -Frans Daniel Pastorius- was aboard. Pastorius was an agent of The German Company who had purchased a large tract of land from William Penn who had been granted the land to be named Pennsylvania by King Charles II of England.

Wilhelm LUKENS was born about 1620 in Dahlen, Germany.⁽¹⁾ He died after 16 Jul 1694.⁽¹⁾ Wilhelm Lucken was a servent of Gotzen Kamericks in Beckrath from 1632-1649. In 1652, Wilhelm and his family suffered what was the beginning of many years of religious persecution by the ruling government. In 1652 they were expelled from Dahlen and moved to Wickrath. In 1678, the Lord of Wickrath expelled the Mennonites and Wilhelm moved under the protection of the Lord of Rheydt. Again in 1694, the Duke of Julich expelled the religious group. Jan's mother, Adelheid (or Aelletgen), was interrogated at Passerdorf on the 29th of August 1694. Parents: Johann LUKENS and Beatrix (Boetzgen) TER MEER.

William LUKENS was born in 1809. He died in 1881. He was buried in Friends Cemetery, Pendelton, IN. Parents: Benjamin LUKENS and Martha DAVES.

William LUKENS Jr. was born in 1713. He died in 1803. William Lukens, Sr. was the third great grandfather of Theodore Roosevelt, 26th President of the United States. He was also the fourth great grandfather of Eleanor Roosevelt. Parents: William LUKENS Sr. and Elizabeth TYSON.
